I went to a show last night that tore my fucking soul apart. All of the bands (Alda, Leech, Hail, Velnias, Fauna) were in the general category of pagany/atmospheric black metal, and each of them were so amazing that I didn't think it could get better. But not only did each set get better, each got progressively darker, as well. Velnias seems to be the most successful and well-known of the bands that played, and they were actually the low point of the night. Not that they weren't awesome, but they were sandwiched between Hail and their candles and robes and puppets and cello, and Fauna with their body paint and rituals and single hour-long song.

And the thing about this show is that I only vaguely knew who was playing. Fauna are local, and I sort of know one of the members from Calliope, the farm/commune that the Weavers of Wolves in the Throne Room own, but mostly I showed up because I show up every time there's a metal type show in Olympia. And my reward was to be transported and then flayed alive. In the good way.

I truly don't feel that these types of experiences could happen in another town, another venue, another crowd. I didn't, going into it, have any idea how these people sounded recorded, and since I failed to bring enough cash for merch, I may not be able to find out now.

And this is why I live in this little, frustrating, inbred town. Tiny it may be, but it has some of the most amazing, creative people, and some of the coolest, most intimate performance spaces I've seen. Even if I do leave this place, I don't think I can call anywhere other than Cascadia my home.
