Ruth’s cries pierced the silence, and the old woman stirred, opening her eyes to the moonlight streaming through the tattered curtains. Gradually she shifted her legs sideways beneath the faded purple blanket, which appeared almost black in the shallow light, and hinged a knee over the edge of the cot to roll herself to sitting. Grimacing at the pain in her right hip and the chill that had settled in the room, she pushed herself to standing. She patted the scarf covering her silver curls into place and made her way through the dim cabin to the child’s bed.

“Abue-la,” the young girl half-whimpered, half-choked, as she struggled to loosen her limbs from the pile of blankets that made up her bed, her eyes glistening with tears. “The water…”

“Shhh, little one.” The old woman smoothed a hand across Ruth’s brow and slid her fingers gently through Ruth’s short but silky hair. “Solo un sueño. The water cannot hurt you here.”

Ruth leaned into her, her thin shoulders curled forward into a tight ball, and the old woman turned to settle beside her, pushing the mound of blankets aside.

“Ven aqui. Sit.” The old woman patted her thighs, and Ruth obeyed, pulling the oversized t-shirt she wore to sleep in down across her knees as she relaxed back into the old woman’s ribcage.

“Perhaps un cuento?”

“Sí, a story,” Ruth agreed in a mumble, her fingers already drawn absentmindedly between her teeth in a self-soothing motion.

“Bien. Shall I tell you the story of the flowers?”

Ruth nodded.

“O-k.” The old woman gently kissed her forehead.

The first half of the month had trips to the Peak district, Manchester and London, while the rest was pretty quiet travel-wise. I have been enjoying the return of horses to the field over the canal. It’s sat largely empty for several years, and it’s nice to look up from my monitor and see them again.

  1. Name all the orange items in the room you are in.

In my office, there is a small adorable crocheted pumpkin, a craft knife, a ballpoint pen and a pad of post it notes, all pictured below.

  2. What's your favourite fall treat?

Pecan pie. I will be making some for Thanksgiving.

  3. What's your favourite Halloween candy?

I used to love those mini Butterfingers. They're not a thing in the UK.

  4. What's your favourite scary/horror movie?

    Alien.

  5. What are you doing on October 31?

Mostly ferrying the kid round to their trick-or-treating playdates!

[Pumpkin carved by Humuhumu, with an Oogie Boogie silhouette.]

We carved our pumpkins last night and I made roasted pumpkin seeds. It takes ages to fish out and prepare the seeds, and all of about three minutes for my family to nail the lot once they come out of the oven. Here's my method:

- Clean all the stringy pumpkin goop off the seeds
- Pre-heat oven to 180 C (fan)
- Boil seeds in heavily salted water for 10 minutes
- Carefully dry the seeds with kitchen roll
- Carefully lay out the seeds in a single layer on baking trays covered in aluminium foil or baking paper
- Sprinkle seeds with more salt
- Pop baking trays into oven, leave for 8-10 minutes or until they start popping
- Pour seeds into bowl, try to sneak a few without burning the inside of my mouth
- Watch the vultures descend

How about you? Do you save the seeds from carving pumpkins? Do you roast and eat them? Do you save some to plant next year?

One of Keiki’s many obsessions is carnivorous plants. He has been maintaining a collection of around 7 plants, a mixture of nepenthes, sundews, and Venus flytraps. Recently he expressed a wish to acquire sarracenias (the more upright pitcher plants). Some sleuthing by the bloke revealed that there is an avid sarracenia grower around an hour’s drive from us, so he contacted them and asked if we could visit. They responded enthusiastically, so we set a date and off we went.

  1. How often do you attend live theater performances?

Four or five times a year. Humuhumu has a couple of friends who are aspiring actors / theatre nerds, and for my last birthday the bloke got me a membership to the Royal Shakespeare Company.

  2. Local community theater or professional theater productions?

See above - it's a mix! And there's a small company in Stratford-Upon-Avon (where the RSC is) called Tread the Boards who like to do Sherlock Holmes and fun / scary Halloween shows.

  3. Which do you prefer: dramas or musicals?

I'm not a huge fan of musicals, but I do love a pantomime.

  4. Have you ever participated in a theatrical production, whether acting, singing or tech?

Yep, as a kid! I particularly enjoyed being a cat in Cats as a pre-teen.

  5. What was the last play or other staged production you attended?

It was Swan Lake (ballet) at the Birmingham Hippodrome. Very beautiful!
